Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rosselini

“She was very professional and friendly and showed an understanding for the photographer’s ambition.”

It caused a great stir when Ingrid Bergman, one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, moved in with the Italian film director Roberto Rosselini. Both were already married, and their affair grew into an international scandal in the press. In the USA, some demanded that her movies be banned, and Senator Edwin C. Johnson held a long speech in Congress about the actress he regarded to be a depraved influence “in the service of evil”. Lennart Nilsson was the first photographer in the world who was allowed to take pictures in the couple’s apartment in Rome. This was in 1950.
