The Salvation Army

In autumn 1962, Lennart Nilsson was assigned by Vecko-Journalen to do a feature on the Salvation Army and its work in Sweden. The editor in chief, Buster von Platen, wanted Lennart to show what being saved involved.

What was intended to be like any other feature, taking a few days to complete, grew into two months of work, resulting in 4,500 photos, 20 pages in three issues, the book Halleluja, and an exhibition at Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

The story is partly about Åke, a deeply unhappy alcoholic, who was saved and became a soldier himself in the “army of lovers”.
