Ett barn blir till

Bonnier Fakta|1976|Böcker, Vetenskapsfotografi

After eleven years, the second edition of A Child Is Born was released. Much had changed in society. It is above all the new reportage photographs that renew this edition. “Thumb-sucking images,” first published in 1974 in "Damernas Värld", became the new cover image. The text was written by Mirjam Furuhjelm, Axel Ingelman-Sundberg, and Claes Wirsén.

The images in “A Child Is Born” reportedly began, according to some sources, as an anti-abortion campaign. That was not why my mother bought the 1976 edition, and it was not why I wore out the book as a child.

”In the routine, it was included that, just as the baby had been delivered, the midwife would hold the child up so that Lennart could take a picture before it was placed on the mother’s breast. This was done to fulfil the vision he had, namely to capture a newborn baby, with the umbilical cord still attached, looking into the camera. I said that it was impossible, because it usually takes a few minutes for the baby to adjust to the light and for its eyes to open slightly. But once he had an idea of the image he wanted, he would not give up.”
